“Andrew was born without much of a choice regarding his future in music. No, he didn’t live in some bizarre, oppressive country where they force you to excel in the arts...but consider his father, renowned jazz trombonist and arranger, Roger Bissell, and his maternal grandfather, Danny Dill - hall of fame songwriter who penned the evergreen classics, “Detroit City” and “Long Black Veil”, which have been recorded hundreds of times by artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, to Mick Jagger, to Jerry Garcia, to Dave Matthews Band. With the gene pool that stacked against him, Andrew simply became a victim of genetic nature. It was only “natural” to nurture that nature by going to college, and Middle Tennessee State University is where Andrew honed his craft of not only composition, but audio production and engineering. At this time, Andrew was leading pop/rock group, Popular Genius; his first major outlet for his developing skills. Popular Genius released 5 albums, and a DVD, toured around the US supporting acclaimed acts such as Cake, Tonic, and Jump Little Children, picked up an endorsement with Godin/Seagull guitars, and gained a varitable legion of devoted fans. One such listener, perhaps not as devotedly legion-istic as some, was Warren Barfield, an artist on Sony/Provident. Warren took notice of Andrew’s songwriting style and wanted to collaborate, so they met and wrote “Shadow” among other songs. Andrew’s first co-writing effort turned into his first cut on a national record: Warren’s album, “Reach”, produced by the acclaimed Marshall Altman. Alas, very good thing comes to and end, and while Popular Genius decided to go on an indefinite hiatus (it’s unduly harsh to use words like “break up” or “disbanded”), Andrew continued on his journey, continuing to write songs with artists, teaming up as a songwriter/producer with a non-profit organization creating custom songs for seriously ill children, and writing/producing advertising jingle, including hundreds of national clients such as Goody’s, McCallister’s Deli, Toyota, PBS, YMCA, and Kroger, to name but a few. Andrew continues to take on all manner of musical project.” |
